One of the easiest ways to get birds to
visit your backyard is to offer them food.
Wild bird enthusiasts will be
delighted by the wide variety of wild bird feeders available – there
are so many types, shapes and sizes from which you can choose. Some bird feeders
are specific to certain types of birds, while others are built to hold a
particular type of feed.
Hummingbird feeders range from the small window-type
where you can watch your hummers up really close; or a large capacity feeder (48
oz.) to keep a multitude of hummingbirds well fed. As you know, hummingbirds
rely on nectar from flowers or hummingbird feeders to give them energy.
Contrary to popular belief, these feeders do not need any food coloring to
attract your hummingbirds.
Squirrel-proof bird feeders cost more than the traditional
hopper feeder; however, if squirrels are a problem, you might just want to
consider one. Squirrel-proof bird feeders come in a variety of styles to discourage the squirrels. The
grid type has a platform that the birds can dip their beaks through to pull out
seed while the squirrels cannot reach in with their (in comparison) larger paws.
There is also the “flipper” type that flips the squirrels off the bird
feeders. Another type actually works using an adjustable weight sensitive perch.
When the heavy squirrel (or large unwanted bird) lands on the perch, the door to
the bird food closes.
If you love detail, our decorative bird feeders may be the way to go.
Some are so detailed that you may be tempted to keep them indoors to show off to
your guests! However, rest assured that these feeders are fully functional and
your birds will “look lovely” feeding from one of these.
Suet feeders are a popular way to feed many types of birds. Our suets are
of the “no-melt” kind. This means that you can offer your birds suet
year-round. Woodpeckers especially are attracted to suet.
There are many other types of feeders that cater to different birds. Plain or
detailed, you’re sure to find a bird feeder to match your favorite bird!
