Bluebird Houses

Bluebird HousesThe bluebird has long been a favorite bird in North America. It is loved for its beautiful blue coloring, as well as, its gentle disposition and its pleasing voice. The bluebird is the symbol of love and happiness in many of our songs.

Sadly, the number of bluebirds in the United States has declined in the past 50 or more years.

You can help the bluebird tremendously by providing a birdhouse made especially for bluebirds. These houses provide much needed places for these birds to build nests and raise their families, thus increasing their population.

Place your bluebird box(es) near open fields or pastures. If you have a large yard or garden some distance from your house, this also may provide your bluebirds a suitable place to nest. Boxes should be put up late winter or early spring when bluebirds are soon expected to return. Avoid placing boxes in areas where insecticides are used since bluebirds may be poisoned when they eat treated insects.

Bluebird houses should be mounted 4 – 6 feet above the ground 50 – 100 yards apart. Placing them near trees, shrubs, or fences will allow your bluebirds to perch nearby.
