Hummingbird Feeders: Bee and Ant Problems

Ants, too, love sugar water – so you will need to deter them from attending the meal! You can buy dripless feeders. Some feeders come with “ant moats.” Do not use oil! Do not use sticky substances that put your hummingbirds in danger of getting stuck to.

If bees or wasps find your hummingbird feeder, they go back to their hive and tell all their friends about the discovered food source. So it's best to try to keep them away before the problem begins. It has been found that bees are attracted to the color yellow. So choosing a feeder that does not have the yellow-colored attachments is recommended. If you have already bought a feeder with a yellow accessory on it, you may try to cover it up or remove it before hanging your feeder. If bees have already discovered your feeder, moving the feeder may also help.
